今日に至るまで帝国と呼べるものには、領土の拡大のための戦争が不可避となるため膨大な人的被害が出ます。これは十分理解できるのですが、ナチス第三帝国を見ていて1番理解できないものがユダヤ人問題の最終的解決でしょう。ヒトラー自身も第一次世界大戦での経験からユダヤ人のドイツへの愛国心は理解しているはずなのになぜこんなことをするのか？ヒトラー政権成立当時、ドイツのユダヤ人の中でその政策に支持を表明した人も少なくはないのです。当初は、第一世界大戦に参加したユダヤ人は迫害の対象外だったのもこれらの事情を考慮してのことでしょう。世界中に広がるユダヤ人社会網特に英米を相手にすることになる、この最終的解決のためにどれだけの人員や資材や鉄道などを浪費することになるのかなどを考えると有害無益でしかないでしょう。ルーズヴェルト政権において最もドイツに対する強硬派だったのは実は財務長官でユダヤ人のモーゲンソーで、ドイツの農業国家化を主張しました。ヴァンゼー会議以降のユダヤ人絶滅の実行は勉強していても、人が人に対してここまでなれるのかと言いたくなるほどの悲しい出来事でした。しかし、ハイトリッヒやアイヒマンなどの幹部から実際に絶滅を実行している親衛隊員まで誰一人としてユダヤ人に個人的に憎悪を抱いているものはいないことこそ最も恐ろしいことでしょう。ドイツ外務省とユダヤ人の移送との関わり、ユダヤ人救出に貢献した人々に関しては『三国同盟秘史』第9話をご覧ください。
